Bruce Willis is back as the tough NYC cop John McClane. The cranky cop once again finds himself at the wrong place, at the wrong time. A terrorist organization hacks into the computer network and is systematically shutting down the country.
The legendary first flick was released in 1988 and lifted the action genre to a new level. The sequels Die Hard 2: Die Harder and Die Hard with a Vengeance reached the same level of the original with its explosive action combined with razor sharp one-liners from our antihero, John McClane. Unfortunately, 20th Century Fox makes an ugly call with the fourth film, Live Free or Die Hard (internationally released as Die Hard 4.0). They decide to make the film PG-13, reach a bigger and younger audience, and that means tone down the action, less blood and of course no dirty words, kids. So the moment we're all waiting for, McClane's killer quote, ends up in the film as "Yippee-ki-yay, mother -sound of gunshot-"!
Yeah, and that just pisses me off! Fox did the exact same thing with that other family-friendly flick called Alien vs. Predator. Some movies are R-Rated for a reason, that's what makes the Die Hard movies special!
I must admit that director Len Wiseman delivered a fast and intense action thriller. The action is slick and over-the-top, even with some jaw-dropping moments. I noticed a few bad dialog editing though, but it's just great to see Bruce Willis back as John McClane. The film is a spectacular entertaining ride, but judging it as a Die Hard flick, man, it unfortunately misses the tone, style and epic feel of the previous movies. Hopefully Fox will listen to the fans next time!
