Mel Gibson's Apocalypto is set in the Mayan civilization where a young man named Jaguar Paw and the people of his village are captured. The men will be used as human sacrifice but Jaguar Paw manage to escape and gets a chance to save his family.
The cast of Apocalypto are unknown actors (or picked right off the street), the dialogue was translated into the authentic language. Apocalyto is something I haven't seen before. I don't know if the movie is completely historically correct but it sure does give an interesting look into this mystique civilization. Gibson's approach of using unknowns and foreign language really pulls you into this world. And of course the detailed make-up effects, weapons, wardrobe and sets are pretty amazing as well.
Apocalypto is a bizarre mix of action-adventure, chase flick, horror and also got one of the meanest villains I've seen in a long time. The cleverly shot sequence where humans are being sacrificed is intense and very, very creepy. But there's more than gore and chopped off heads, Gibson also creates an emotional back story for the main characters so you really feel the pain they're going through when the village is being attacked.
Apocalypto is impressive on all levels, storytelling, uniqueness, settings and loads of very brutal (but awesomely cool) action. Like I've mentioned before, Apocalyto is something I haven't seen before and it resulted in a very pleasant movie experience. I love it when filmmakers don't go by the book and simply do their own thing.
